The area  had already been populated as early as the Age of the Hungarian conquest. The land was gifted to the Valliant, Turcol because he won a riding competition. According to a legend the name of the village is originated from the champion’s name. The alleged grave of Turcol was excavated in 1894. The Parliament met in Tarcal in 1110 and Kálmán Könyves (Coloman the Possessor of Books) declared his famous law here. The rebel that was the antecendents of Rákóczi’s War for Independence broke out here.

At the end of the 18th century phylloxera destroyed the vineyards of the village. After the World War II both Researching Centre of Tarcal had been organised here so Tarcal became the wine-growing centre of the area.

Tarcal Winehouses

The old manor winehouses are truly mansions. The Baroque-classicist Rákóczi House is worth highlighting; also the Sebeő Country House, the House of Wines of Tarcal, the Andrássy Country House and the Royal  Court with it's arcaded corridors and enclosed courtyard representating the medieval baronial manors.

Roman Catholic Church

It was later overbuilt in a Baroque style. A XVIII-century statue composition known as the Piety of Tarcal can be seen on its northern wall. On the hill the Theresa Chapel, an oval Baroque building, has become the symbol of the place.
